How to make a watermelon Refresher

If there ever was a fruit that literally begged to be turned into a summer drink, it’s the watermelon. It’s already juicy and sweet, so there’s not a lot you need  to do to turn it into the perfect refreshing drink for hot days.

We have a simple watermelon mocktail recipe that can be made using fresh watermelon, freshly squeezed lime, mint, and mainelove with Bubbles. This isn’t exactly a radically new take on watermelon. In fact, many watermelon mocktail recipes are based around the same mix of watermelon, lime, mint, and sparkling water and they all taste really great. So we figured, why fix something that ain’t broken?

What is a watermelon refresher?

A watermelon refresher is a non-alcoholic drink that’s made using fresh watermelon and other flavors that go well with its sweetness. The lime adds tartness, the mint makes it fresh and the fizz makes it the perfect summer refresher.

Watermelon is already very juicy, so you don't need to add a lot of water/soda. All you need to do is blend the fruit, the herbs and lime. That's pretty much it!

Ingredients you need to make a watermelon mocktail

  • 4 cups seedless watermelon, cut into cubes

  • 1/4 cup of fresh lime juice

  • 8 to 10 fresh mint leaves

  • 1 cup mainelove with Bubbles

  • Ice (based on your preference)

  • Watermelon wedge, lime slice, or mint sprig for garnish

How to make a watermelon mocktail refresher

  1. Add chunks of watermelon and lime juice to a blender and blend until smooth. If your watermelon pieces are too large, your blender might get stuck. If that happens, pulse it a few times first to break up the larger pieces of fruit.

  2. Next, strain the watermelon mixture through a fine-mesh strainer into a pitcher. Press gently with a spoon to get as much liquid as possible. You can skip this step if you do not mind a little pulp.

  3. You then add the mint leaves to the pitcher and muddle the mint, i.e., give the mint a few gentle presses with a muddler or the end of a wooden spoon to release the mint oils.

  4. Fill the glasses with ice and pour in the watermelon mixture. Fill each glass about two-thirds of the way.

  5. Top each glass with mainelove with Bubbles and give it one light stir.

  6. If you want you can dress it up with a small watermelon wedge, lime slice, or sprig of mint.

You can add a little honey or simple syrup if your watermelon isn't particularly sweet. But taste it first because watermelons are usually sweet enough to skip sweeteners altogether. Other recipes call for honey or maple syrup.

Tip: Don't add the mainelove with Bubbles until ready to serve. And if you add it to the watermelon juice too early, you’ll lose the fizz. Nobody wants a flat mocktail. To avoid this, you can make the watermelon mixture in advance and store it in the fridge separately.

What is a good mix with watermelon?

Lime and mint go really well with watermelon. Lime cuts through the sweetness, and mint adds a fresh taste. If you want a fizzy drink, use sparkling water or mainelove with Bubbles. You can also try adding cucumber, ginger, basil, strawberries, or even a little jalapeño.

What is a good non-alcoholic drink with watermelon?

A watermelon mocktail is simple to make. It’s a sweet, tart, minty, and fizzy drink without any alcohol in it.

Can I make a watermelon mocktail with Sprite?

Yes, you can use Sprite instead of sparkling water in a watermelon mocktail. Since Sprite is sweet, you might not need extra honey or syrup.

What is the best watermelon cocktail?

If you prefer an alcoholic version, just add white rum to the watermelon mocktail recipe we’ve listed above.

Is a watermelon mocktail healthy?

Yes, watermelon mocktails are usually considered healthy because you can make it without added sugar and it contains vitamin C, potassium, magnesium, and lycopene.
