How to make a sleepy girl mocktail recipe

If you’ve spent enough time on social media, there’s no way you missed all the various sleepy girl mocktail recipes. It’s a wellness drink made with cherry juice, magnesium, and sparkling or soda water. This mocktail is said to improve your sleep quality and help your muscles relax. Because there’s no alcohol involved, you don’t wake up with a hangover either. A win-win in our book! That’s why we went ahead and created our own version of the viral sleep girl mocktail recipe.

Before we get on to the recipe itself, here’s something you must note. The sleepy girl mocktail can be a relaxing addition to your bedtime routine, but it’s not a guaranteed sleep aid. At present, there is little evidence to show that cherry juice and magnesium will ensure a good night’s sleep. We recommend you consider it a relaxing nightcap rather than as some kind of magical sleeping draught from the Harry Potter universe.

How the Sleepy Girl Mocktail went viral

In January 2023, content creator Calee Shea shared a tart cherry drink on TikTok. Later that year, in March 2023, wellness influencer Gracie Norton posted her own version which included magnesium powder. Norton's video quickly gained millions of views.

Cut to a year later in early 2024 and the sleepy girl mocktail surged again!  This time it was driven by "Dry January" trends. Millions of people were searching for alcohol-free night caps and brands like Olipop jumped on the bandwagon, thus pushing the hashtag to over tens of millions of views.

The idea behind the mocktail is rather simple. Tart cherries have melatonin, which helps control your sleep-wake cycle. Also there was a study that suggested that tart cherry juice might help with sleep.  Magnesium supports muscle and nerve function. So mixing them up should theoretically support your sleep.

That said, don’t use this drink as a replacement for medical treatment if you have ongoing sleep problems.

Ingredients you need to make a Sleepy Girl Mocktail

  • 1/2 cup tart cherry juice, preferably 100% juice

  • 1 tsp magnesium powder

  • 3 oz mainelove with Bubbles

  • Ice

Tart cherry juice is the key ingredient here, so choose one with little or no added sugar. Most recipes use about a teaspoon of magnesium powder, but the amount depends on the product. Always follow the instructions on your magnesium supplement, since more isn’t necessarily better.

How to make a Sleepy Girl Mocktail

  1. Add the tart cherry juice and magnesium powder to a glass.

  2. Stir well for about 20 to 30 seconds until the magnesium powder dissolves. Make sure there’s no powder left at the bottom of the glass.

  3. Fill the glass with ice and pour 3 ounces of mainelove with Bubbles on top. You can add more if you prefer a lighter, fizzier drink.

  4. Stir gently once to mix everything while making sure you don’t lose the bubbles.

You can add a squeeze of lime to make the tart cherry flavor brighter. Some people use flavored sparkling water, coconut water, or chamomile tea instead of the usual fizzy drink.

Most sleepy Girl Mocktail recipes recommend you drink it approximately an hour before bed. Again we caution that  there’s no magic one-hour countdown that guarantees you'll be asleep at a specific time.
