Is Bottled Water Distilled?

Most bottled water is not distilled. Distilled water is produced by boiling water, collecting the resulting vapor, and condensing it back into liquid. This process removes most dissolved minerals and many impurities.

A bottle of water at the grocery store could instead contain spring water, purified water, mineral water, artesian water, or another regulated form of drinking water.

If you specifically need distilled water—for example, for certain appliances or equipment—you should look for the word “distilled” on the label.

Purified water is not automatically distilled water either. Purified water may be treated through reverse osmosis, deionization, distillation, or another purification process.
