A mojito recipe you can't mess up

Most of us have made a bad mojito at least once in our life! Mojito recipes look simple but are surprisingly easy to get wrong. That's why we came up with one that will not let you down.

Apparently, it’s not just the rum that makes or breaks a mojito. The real difference comes from the quality of your sparking water and the freshness of your limes. Here’s the version we make now, and it has never let us down.

What the mojito is and where it came from

The mojito is a classic Cuban cocktail that’s made with white rum, sugar, lime, mint, and soda water. Most origin stories agree on one thing, that the mojito's birthplace is Havana. What no one can agree on is why it came into existence (though we’re all equally glad that it did!). Theories range from it being a herbal remedy to being an invention of the English privateer, Sir Francis Drake. Over the years, it gained a pretty big fan following, and still holds steadfast today despite the advent of fancier cocktails.

Ingredients you’ll need to make a mojito

  • 2 oz white rum

  • 1 lime, cut into wedges

  • 2 tsp granulated sugar

  • 8 to 10 mint leaves, plus a sprig to garnish

  • Mainelove With Bubbles, to top off

  • Crushed ice

How to make it

  1. Drop the mint leaves, lime wedges, and sugar into a sturdy glass.

  2. Muddle everything together for about 10 seconds, pressing down to release the lime juice and work the sugar in. You'll know you're done when the glass smells like mint and most of the sugar's dissolved into the juice.

  3. Add the rum and give it a stir.

  4. Fill the glass with crushed ice, not cubes, crushed.

  5. Top with Mainelove With Bubbles and stir once or twice, you're not trying to dissolve anything at this point.

  6. Garnish with a lime wheel and a mint sprig (bruise it with your palms first so that it smells nice and minty fresh).

P.S.  If you’re making these for a group, cut all your limes into wedges ahead of time and have the sugar measured out so you're not fumbling mid-muddle.

FAQ

What are the ingredients in a mojito?

White rum, fresh limes, sugar, mint leaves, mainelove with bubbles, and ice are all the ingredients you need to make a mojito.

How do you make a simple mojito?

Muddle mint, lime wedges, and sugar together in a glass, add rum, fill with crushed ice, and top with soda water.

What is a classic mojito made of?

The classic version sticks to white rum, fresh lime juice, sugar cane juice, mint, and soda water, muddled together and served over crushed ice in a tall glass

Is a mojito very alcoholic?

Two ounces of rum is a fairly normal pour for a cocktail, so it's not exactly light, but it's nowhere near as strong as something like a martini since you're cutting it with lime, syrup, and soda water. Depends a lot on how heavy handed you are with the bottle, honestly.

What's in a dirty mojito?

A dirty mojito uses dark or spiced rum instead of white which gives it a little more depth and punch.

How do you make a mojito mocktail?

Leave the rum out of the cocktail recipe but we have a proper mocktail version coming up soon if you’d prefer a recipe with step-by-step instructions.
